A new independent school for secondary age children , where teachers follow one step ahead and children discover themselves.

Do you want to be more involved in your child's education?

As a childs first and natural teachers, parents have a right if not a responsibility to continue to play a full part in their childs education.  Whether you have home-educated or have used more conventional schools, South Downs Small School offers you the chance to play a full and active part in your childs teaching and learning.  For this reason, our school is not a fixed, autocratic entity, with every element determined by anonymous bureaucrats: it is a school made by and for its parents and children.  Whether your contributions are seen inside or outside the classroom, your energy and ideas will make the school what it is... and what it becomes.

Do you want your child to be treated with respect and valued for what they can do rather than judged by what they cannot do?

South Downs Small School places each child at the centre of their learning experience, encouraging and supporting them to become independent, critical and reflective learners. Your child will not be seen as a uniform and uniformed member of a large and impersonal institution, but rather as a unique individual in a small learning community where their natural desire to learn is valued and nurtured.

Do you think that schooling can be about more than examination grades?

As the school grows, we will offer GCSE and A Level courses. We also plan to cater for those interested in portfolio courses such as community volunteering, food & hygiene, health & safety, and individual projects.

Do you want a school that values and encourages self-motivation and self-discipline?

With this degree of freedom from a prescriptive curriculum and state control comes responsibility, and every child will be encouraged to set personal objectives and learn to manage their time and their learning effectively. In this way we will prepare your child to become a confident and successful lifelong learner.

Do you want your child to have a full and fulfilling life as a member of the global community?

At South Downs Small School we feel that all teaching and learning should relate to the needs of the individual child, the local community, the wider world, and the future. This ensures that our work is holistic in practice as well as in theory.

Do you think that the division of knowledge leads to an inadequate understanding of the real world?

The South Downs Small School curriculum is an ongoing process rather than a fixed list determined, imposed and assessed by anonymous figures far removed from the students’ own experience and from their community. Our evolving curriculum is founded on the principle of holistic education, exploring the relationships between different areas of knowledge and understanding rather than divorcing them from each other.

Do you want a school that looks beyond its own four walls?

Whenever possible, we will use our local environment as a learning resource: for scientific experiments, creative writing, mathematical investigations, history and geography research, and many other purposes. We will also involve the local community, using their experience and expertise
